The Sterling was introduced in 1992, shortly after the demise of, and in order to replace, the Clubman, which ceased production in 1991. During its lifetime, it received one significant revamp, which impacted on its dimensions and weights. The top numbers in the boxes above relate to the Mark 1 Sterling, whereas the lower values relate to the facelifted Mark 2.
The Sterling was introduced at the same time as the facelifted Mark 2 Pullman, and, externally, they were almost identical, apart from colour scheme. Internally, also, the two models were extremely similar. The Pullman had a distinctive internal and external colour scheme, whereas the Sterling did have a few different combinations in terms of fabrics and soft furnishings.
It was, in effect, a budget version of the Pullman (just like the Clubman, before it, had been) with no fridge, wardrobe or kitchen shelf unit, although these were all available as optional extras, so the distinction is not always that clear. There was also a product between the two, called the Sterling SE (Special Equipment) which further blurred the lines between the respective models.
At this time, there were only three exterior colour schemes available. The Pullman was terracotta and white, the Sterling green and white, and the SE was blue and white (as in pictures two and four above).
In 1999 (three years after the Pullman) the Sterling was facelifted, with exterior body mouldings and new interior trim. The basic equipment level, however, remained the same, with a two burner hob, three way fridge and cold water, electric foot pump fed faucet. It was, also, renamed, the Sterling 510 (to denote it's length, in cm, when erected). The various colour schemes etc can be seen in the brochures below.
As Blue Sky have always dealt in Pennines, this site, as well as the Blue Sky blog already include quite a lot of information on the Sterling, and there is little point in reproducing it all here. For anyone wishing to find out more about these excellent folding campers, you can do so as follows:
